10 Things I’m Thankful For in 2017

10 Things I’m Thankful For in 2017

I can’t believe it is November 1st already! This year has just completely flown by. Pretty soon we’ll be gearing up for Thanksgiving (if you’re American), and Christmas. The holiday season is fast approaching, and if you’re anything like me, you’re still getting over the whirlwind that was Halloween.

Yesterday The Husband came home after being away overnight for the first time in a very long time. He had just headed up to his sister’s house in Edinburgh to spend the night. The following day they went to the cemetery in Glasgow to perform the usual Chinese ritual of bowing, placing incense, and the deceased’ favorite items on the headstone. They clean away any leftover items such as dead flowers and make sure that the sites look nice. There are quite a few of The Husband’s relatives buried there, so they place flowers and incense at each headstone. Punky and I didn’t go due to Punky’s school routine.

Punky and I had a very hard time sleeping without The Husband home. Just knowing he’s here making sure everything is ok in the middle of the night is a huge comfort to both of us. When he got home, we all had a few moments of snuggle time, and after we both helped Punky with his homework. After homework, The Husband gave Punky his bath while I sorted out laundry. Before bed, the three of us wound up having a wild pillow fight in The Husband and I’s bedroom. It was SO.MUCH.FUN!

This morning I’ve had time to reflect on what I’ve been thankful for all year, and what I’m looking forward to going into the holiday season.  Here you’ll find the 15 Things I’m Thankful For in 2017!

10 Things I’m Thankful For

  1. My family. They drive me crazy sometimes, but they love me unconditionally. The Husband has been my rock this year with all of my health issues. He’s seen me at my best, and at my worst, and has stuck with me through it all. Punky has completely blossomed now. He’s so kind, thoughtful, honest (sometimes brutally so), funny, and energetic. He definitely keeps me on my toes! The ritual we say to each other every single night before he goes to sleep is “Goodnight, I love you, and I’ll see you in the morning. Sweet dreams!” We give each other 3 forehead kisses, a big snuggle, and I just hold him for a few minutes while everything is still and quiet. Those few moments, to me, are bliss.
  2. My Friends. No matter what’s going on in my life, my friends are my support system that I’d never trade for the world. Whether they’re online friends only, IRL (in real life) friends, or a little bit of both, I know that we’ve always got each other’s backs.
  3. Warm blankets. Scotland is a wet, cold country for ¾ of the year. Our summertime lasts only about a week of nice weather, and then it’s back to dreary. Tons of blankets are necessary to keep us warm when we don’t feel like turning on the heat in July.
  4. Coffee. There’s really no explanation necessary about why I love coffee so much.
  5. A roof over my head and food in my kitchen. There are so many people living on the streets without access to the basic necessities, and I’m extremely thankful that I’m not in that situation. I can’t imagine how difficult it is.
  6. Money in the bank. The Husband works hard to make sure we’ve always got enough to cover our basic needs. We were extremely poor for a few years after Punky was born, and I never want to go back to that. It was extremely hard, frustrating, stressful, and more feelings that I can’t express without using a string of expletives.
  7. Skype. Without Skype I wouldn’t be able to speak to my family in America. I wouldn’t be able to see my niece growing up, or wish her a happy birthday. I wouldn’t be able to keep track of how my parents and brothers are doing. Without Skype I wouldn’t even get to speak to my grandma. I miss them all so much, and Skype helps facilitate that closeness that you can’t get over the phone.
  8. Sunshine.  I’m thankful for every single day of sunshine that we get here in Scotland. It’s rare, but when the sun does peek out from behind the clouds, it’s almost magical.
  9. Airplanes. Without traveling on an airplane, I would have never moved to the UK, seen Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Hong Kong, and a small section of Amsterdam. I would have never left Michigan. There is such a huge world outside of one (in the grand scheme of things) small state, that I’d have missed out on some amazing experiences.
  10. My Readers and Social Media Followers. Without you guys, none of this would be possible. Thank you for supporting me when I wasn’t sure of my own abilities.

End Note

Now that I’m done being sappy for a few minutes, I’d like to end this post on a positive note. There are many, many more things I’m thankful for, that I’ll most likely share closer to Thanksgiving. No matter what is going on in your life, there is always something to be thankful for. Please share in the comments here, or in your social media platform of choice what you’re thankful for today.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
